The Parachute Regiment Association, Durham Branch President John Devanney MBE.

We are extremely proud to have former S.Q.M.S. John Devanney as our President; here is a little about him.

 
John plays a very active and important role in the affairs of the Durham Branch Parachute Regimental Association.
His experience in matters, be it Military civilian or life in general is invaluable, the Branch truly appreciate his support, advise, participation, and general candour. John is a well respected member of the local community; he is also very well known and respected within the Parachute Regimental Association and regular forces. John is a very confident and assured gentleman as his proud and distinguished career demonstrates.

John was enlisted into the Army Catering Corps in September 1953 through National Service, shortly after training he was posted to Gibraltar in 1954, and was attached to 94 New Zealand Battery ANZAC, 72 Engineer Regiment, Duke of Wellington Regiment. He was de-mobbed in September 1955. John went on after a brief spell in civilian life to join C Company 17th Battalion 9 DLI Parachute Regiment TA on Christmas day 1963, he has to be one of a select few to have done this, if not the only one.

John attained the rank of Corporal during his time in the Parachute Regiment. In 1968 17 Para the 12th and 13th Battalions amalgamated to form the 4th Battalion TAVR. In 1969 John transferred to the Army Catering Corps still remaining a Para. In 1972 he was promoted to Sergeant, during 1976 he was awarded the Lord Lieutenants Certificate. John was promoted to SQMS Master Chef in 1978. In 1992 he was awarded the MBE for services to the Parachute Regiment.

John retired one month before his sixty fourth birthday in 1999 due to options change. In all a total of thirty six years with the Parachute Regiment plus two years National Service. John Devanney is an honorary member of the WOs and Sgts Mess Past and Present Dinner Club, and has been a member of the Durham Branch since its inauguration. John lives with his lady wife Beryl and resides in Consett Co, Durham. He has Three Children, Gillian, John and Tracy, and seven Grandchildren.

Lastly but certainly not least, he is one of five Brothers who have all served in the Parachute Regiment a fact that is quite unique.
